Pioneer Camp mid layer

This is the shelf you will reach for most often, and the four families on it do different jobs. A polar fleece jacket is the plain warm one: a thick brushed face, a full zip, two or four pockets, and nothing on it that a shell would fight with. Grid fleece is the technical one: the inside is a waffle of raised squares with channels between them, so damp air moves out instead of sitting against you, and it is cut close enough to go under a jacket without bunching. Sherpa is the heaviest and the softest, and it is the one that reads as a coat on its own. The half-zips and quarter-zips are the layer you put on at a break and take off ten minutes into walking again; the zip goes far enough down to dump heat fast. Sizes run XS to 3XL. Between two letters, take the smaller if this is going under a shell and the larger if it is going over a shirt.

Which fleece is the warm one, what a grid face does that a flat one does not, and where the zip stops on a half-zip.

Which Pioneer Camp fleece goes under a shell without bunching?

The grid fleece and the half-zips. Grid fleece has a waffled inside face, so it is thinner across the shoulders than a polar fleece of the same warmth and slides under an outer layer instead of gathering at the armhole. A full-zip polar fleece is cut as an outer layer in its own right and will bulk up under a shell.

Is a Pioneer Camp sherpa hoodie warm enough on its own in winter?

On a dry day, for most people, yes: sherpa is the heaviest thing on this shelf and reads as a coat. What it will not do is turn wind, because a fleece face is open by design, so on an exposed walk it wants something over it. Buyers who wear one as a jacket are mostly wearing it in town rather than on a ridge.

Where does the zip stop on a Pioneer Camp half-zip?

Far enough down the chest to dump heat quickly and not so far that the layer stops being a pullover, which is the whole point of the cut: you open it at the top of a climb and close it at the top of the descent. The quarter-zips open less and sit closer at the neck; the card names which one a piece is.
