01Warm where it matters, free where it does not
Quilted puffer vests with four pockets, fleece and sherpa vests with five, and light water-resistant vests for the shoulder seasons.

A vest is the answer to a specific complaint: your body is cold and your arms are in the way. Anyone swinging an axe, casting, driving a long day or working outside in autumn ends up here, because the core stays warm and the shoulders stay free, and nothing bunches at the elbow. The puffer vests are the warm ones, quilted through and cut to go under a shell; the fleece and sherpa vests are the ones you wear indoors as much as out; and the light water-resistant vests are the pocketed ones, bought for what they carry rather than for what they hold in. They layer well because they add no bulk at the arm: a fleece vest under a rain jacket is warmer than a fleece jacket under the same shell and moves better. Sizes run S to 3XL.

Prices are the figures from our last update; we refresh them on a schedule, which is the least glamorous part of Pioneer Camp standards, and the figure at the till is the one that counts.
05Before you order
Why a vest instead of a jacket, which of these is the warm one, and what the heated vest actually runs on.
Because your arms are the part in the way. Splitting logs, casting, driving a long day, working a yard in October: the core needs the warmth and the shoulders need to move, and a sleeve is what bunches at the elbow. A vest also layers under a shell better than a jacket does, because it adds no bulk at the armhole.
The quilted puffer vests, which carry the same fill as the jackets in a shorter body, and the sherpa-lined ones after them. The plain fleece vests are a mid layer and an indoor layer; the light water-resistant vests are the pocketed ones, bought for what they carry more than for what they hold in.
Yes, and the card says where it goes: a battery pack sits in a chest pocket and runs the panels, so the vest is only warm while it is charged and only useful if you remember to charge it. It is the right answer for standing still in cold for hours and the wrong one for a long walk away from power.
