A half-zip exists because a full zip is more than you usually need and a crew neck is less. Walking uphill you overheat at the neck and the chest first, and a zip pulled down eighteen inches dumps that heat in seconds without taking anything off or letting your pack down. At the top you pull it back up and the collar goes to the chin. That is the whole design, and it is why the half-zips get worn more days a year than any other fleece in a wardrobe.

The difference between a half and a quarter zip is how far the opening runs. A quarter zip sits higher and closer, which is warmer and less adjustable; a half zip opens further and vents faster. Neither has the pockets of a full-zip fleece, and that is deliberate: a pullover with loaded pockets sags. The weights here run from a light knit that goes under a shirt to a fleece heavy enough to be the only layer on a dry day. Sizes run S to 2XL.

Every colourway here is priced on its own; the Pioneer Camp range keeps the figures current and the till is what decides.

Questions about Pioneer Camp Half-Zip Pullovers

Open at the top of the climb

How far down does a Pioneer Camp half-zip open?

Far enough to vent the chest quickly and not so far that it stops being a pullover, which is the point of the cut. The quarter-zips open less and sit closer at the neck; the card names which one a piece is so you are not guessing from a photograph.

Is a Pioneer Camp quarter-zip warm enough on its own?

The heavier fleece ones are, on a dry, still day. The light knits are a layer under something rather than a jacket, and none of them stop wind. If it is the only thing you are taking, a full-zip fleece with pockets is the more useful garment.

Do Pioneer Camp half-zips have pockets?

Mostly not, and that is on purpose: a pullover with weight in the pockets pulls out of shape and sags at the hem. Where a piece carries a chest pocket the card counts it. The full-zip fleeces are the ones with hand pockets.
