Pioneer Camp insulated jackets

Pioneer Camp jacket

Start with what the weather is going to do rather than with a temperature. Down is the warmest thing here for its weight and it packs into its own pocket, so the down hooded jackets and the packable puffers are the ones people carry rather than wear; the fill power printed on a card describes the loft of that down, not the warmth of the finished jacket, so a 650-fill parka with a lot of down in it beats an 850-fill shell with a thin layer of it. The synthetic and PrimaLoft jackets keep more of their loft when they get damp, and that is the trade you are making. The parkas are the long ones, cut past the hip with seven or nine pockets and a hood that comes off on several; the puffers are shorter, three or four pockets, and the hem pulls in on most of them so the heat does not walk out at the waist. Sizes run XS to 3XL. If this is going over a fleece, take the larger of two letters.

Prices are the figures from our last update; we refresh them on a schedule, which is the least glamorous part of the Pioneer Camp routine, and the figure at the till is the one that counts.

Questions about Pioneer Camp insulated jackets

What a fill power figure buys you, why a puffer with a drawstring hem holds heat better, and how many pockets you get and which of them zip.

Does the hood come off a Pioneer Camp parka?

On several of them, and the card says so: where the line reads "removable hood" the hood unzips or unsnaps at the collar, and where it reads "hood" it is sewn in. It is worth checking before you order if the jacket is going to double as a town coat, because a fur-trimmed hood on a station platform is a different look from a hood on a hill.

Will a Pioneer Camp puffer keep you dry in rain?

Not for long, and none of these are sold as rain jackets. Most of the puffers and parkas here carry a water-resistant face that beads a shower and sheds wet snow, which is what the card says; a sustained downpour goes through, and once down is soaked it stops working until it is dried out properly. If rain is the likelier problem, put a taped shell over the jacket or buy a synthetic fill.

How many pockets does a Pioneer Camp winter coat have?

Three or four on the puffers, seven or nine on the long parkas, and the card prints the count for the piece you are looking at. What matters more than the number is which of them zip: an open handwarmer pocket is a handwarmer, and a phone belongs in a zipped one on a chairlift or a bus.
