Pioneer Camp piece

Nothing on this shelf costs much and every one of them can ruin a day by being wrong. Merino socks are the clearest case: wool keeps some of its warmth when it is damp and does not hold smell the way a synthetic sock does, and they are sold in threes because a hiking sock is a consumable. Gaiters are the least glamorous thing here and the most useful in wet grass or loose scree: a cuff of coated Cordura from boot to calf that keeps water, grit and snow out of the top of the boot. The caps split into two: a wide brim for standing in open sun, where the ears and the back of the neck are what burns, and a light running cap for keeping sweat and glare out of your eyes. Wind is the reason gloves are on this list at all; the Weather Service chart is a good argument for a pair in a pocket from October onward.

Prices are the figures from our last update; we refresh them on a schedule, which is the least glamorous part of Pioneer Camp standards, and the figure at the till is the one that counts.

Questions about Pioneer Camp accessories

Which socks are the merino ones, what leg gaiters keep out, and which cap carries a UPF figure.

Why are Pioneer Camp hiking socks sold in threes?

Because a hiking sock is a consumable, and because the first thing that happens on a wet day is that you want a dry pair. Merino is the reason these are the ones to buy: wool keeps some of its warmth damp, and it does not hold smell the way a synthetic sock does after two days out.

What do Pioneer Camp leg gaiters keep out?

Water off wet grass, grit off scree, snow off a track and most of what a trouser cuff otherwise scoops into the top of your boot. They are a sleeve of coated nylon from the instep to the calf with a strap under the sole, they are the least glamorous thing on this site, and they change a wet walk more than any jacket does.

Which Pioneer Camp cap do you want for standing in open sun?

The wide-brim one. A running cap keeps glare and sweat out of your eyes and does nothing for the ears or the back of the neck, which is exactly where people burn on open ground; a three-inch brim covers both. One of the caps carries a UPF figure on the label and the card prints it.
