Jackets divide by the problem they solve, not by the season on the label, and this page puts all of them side by side so the comparison is possible. Insulation is one problem: the puffers and parkas carry down at fill powers from the mid six hundreds to 850, or a synthetic fill for days when getting damp is likelier than getting cold. Water is another: the rain jackets and the ski jackets are the ones with tape over the seams, which is the difference between an afternoon in rain and a wet shoulder in twenty minutes. Wind is the third, and it is what the softshells and the windbreakers are for: no insulation at all in the light ones, just a face the wind cannot get through.

Hoods are worth checking before you order. Nearly every jacket here has one, and on several of the parkas it comes off at the collar, which is what turns a hill jacket into a town coat. Pockets run from three on a short puffer to nine on a long parka, and the card names which of them zip. Nothing on this page carries a temperature rating and nothing ever will: what you will be comfortable in depends on the wind and on whether you are moving, and the Weather Service chart is a better guide to that than any number we could print. Sizes run XS to 3XL depending on the piece.
