A parka is bought for a different problem from a puffer: not for carrying, but for standing still in the cold for a long time. That is why these are cut long, past the hip and sometimes past the thigh, because the parts of you that get cold at a bus stop or on a touchline are the ones a short jacket leaves out. The length is the feature, and it is the reason nothing on this page packs into its own pocket.

The rest of it follows from the same idea. Seven or nine pockets, because a coat you stand about in is a coat you keep things in, and the card names which of them zip. A drawstring at the waist, so the coat can be pulled in against wind instead of hanging open like a chimney. A hood, removable on most of them, which is what lets the same coat go to a hill and to a station platform. The faces are water-resistant rather than waterproof: they shed wet snow and a shower and are not built for a day of rain. Sizes run XS to 3XL.

Every colourway here is priced on its own; Pioneer Camp pieces keeps the figures current and the till is what decides.

Questions about Pioneer Camp Parkas

For standing about in the cold

Does the hood come off a Pioneer Camp parka?

On most of them, at the collar, and the card says so where it does. It is worth checking if the coat is doing double duty, because a big hood is the single thing that makes a winter coat look like hill kit in a city.

How long is a Pioneer Camp parka?

Past the hip on all of them and past the thigh on several, which is the point of the shelf. If you want something shorter that still carries insulation, the puffers are the same warmth in a body cut at the waist, and they pack down as well.

Is a Pioneer Camp parka warm enough for a real winter?

They are the warmest thing in this catalogue, and how warm that is depends on the wind rather than the thermometer, the Weather Service chart is worth a look before you decide. Nothing here carries a temperature rating, and a parka plus a fleece will always beat a parka alone on the worst day.
