A puffer is a short insulated jacket and the things that separate two of them are the fill, the face and the hem. The fill powers here are 650 and 700, which is the range where warmth and price meet for most people: high enough to compress into a bag, not so high that you are paying for loft you will not use standing at a touchline. The face on most of these is water-resistant, which beads a shower and sheds dry snow and is not a rain jacket.

The hem is the detail people underrate. A puffer with a drawstring at the hem seals the bottom of the jacket when the wind gets under it; one without lets warm air out at the waist every time you move, and no amount of fill compensates for that. Over half of these fold into their own pocket, which is the reason a puffer rather than a fleece ends up in a bag for a flight or a summer evening in the hills. Sizes run XS to 3XL, and the jackets are cut with a mid layer in mind.

Every colourway here is priced on its own; Pioneer Camp pieces keeps the figures current and the till is what decides.

Questions about Pioneer Camp Puffer Jackets

Warmth you can fold up

What does 650 fill power mean on a Pioneer Camp puffer?

That an ounce of the down in it lofts to 650 cubic inches, which is a measure of the down's quality rather than of how warm the jacket is. Two jackets at 650 fill can differ enormously in warmth depending on how much down is in them, so read the figure alongside how much jacket there is.

Will a Pioneer Camp puffer keep you dry?

Through a shower, yes; the face on most of them beads water. Through rain, no, and down that gets soaked stops insulating until it has been dried out properly. If wet is the likelier problem than cold, a synthetic-fill jacket or a shell over the top is the better answer.

Which Pioneer Camp puffers pack down?

The card says packable where the jacket folds into its own pocket or a sack, and over half of these do. It is the difference between a jacket you own and a jacket you actually have with you, which is most of what a puffer is for.
